KBC Tools & Machinery: A 60-Year Legacy of Excellence in Metalworking

KBC Tools All Metal All The Time

In the heart of Detroit, Michigan, known as "The Motor City," a remarkable journey began in 1965. KBC Tools and Machinery Inc., originally named "Kabaco Tools," was founded by Karel Bass. What started as a modest catalog house selling surplus and English tools to the metalworking industry at competitive rates would go on to become an industry leader known for its unwavering commitment to excellence.

The Early Days

KBC's motto from the start was simple but powerful: "We Will Not Be Undersold." This commitment to ultra-competitive pricing and bulk purchasing power for the metalworking industry has been a cornerstone of the company's success for over five decades.

KBC's original home was a humble 1,000-square-foot rental space on Eight Mile Road. In those early years, Karel Bass split his time between Detroit and London, England, as the business steadily grew. However, in 1968, with the company's expansion, Karel decided to permanently relocate to Detroit with his wife Sheila and daughter Paula. This marked the beginning of a new chapter for KBC.

Growth and Expansion

As KBC continued to thrive, the catalog grew in size and scope, offering more suppliers, products, and pages to meet the evolving needs of its clients. The company's clients relied on KBC for everything related to maintenance, repair, and operations, allowing them to focus on their core work while KBC handled the sourcing of tooling and accessories.

Always eager for new opportunities and challenges, Karel Bass ventured into California in the 1980s, acquiring a supplier's business just outside San Francisco. This move led to the birth of the first KBC branch. Recognizing the potential for growth, KBC expanded internationally in 1989 with the opening of its first Canadian branch near Toronto, Ontario.

By the 1990s, KBC had become an international player, serving clients not only in North America but also in South America, Mexico, and Japan. Karel's daughter, Paula Bass, took over the reins as the company's President in 1993, marking a significant milestone on her 30th birthday.

Commitment to Excellence

Guided by a dedicated management team, KBC Tools continued to expand and improve. New branches were established in Windsor (1992), Vancouver (1992), Chicago (1995), and Los Angeles (1998), strengthening the company's North American presence. Throughout this growth, KBC remained steadfast in its commitment to customer service, top-quality tools, and competitive pricing.

The company's facilities received constant upgrades, with showrooms and warehouses in Toronto, Detroit, Chicago, and other locations seeing renovations. KBC's inventory grew to become one of the most impressive tooling and machinery collections anywhere, offering a wide range of products from around the world.

Modernization and Innovation

In recent years, KBC Tools embraced modernization and innovation. The company launched a user-friendly website and mobile app, featuring over 100,000 items spanning cutting tools, carbide tooling, fluids, work holding, abrasives, measuring and inspection tools, and more. Clients can now conveniently scan barcodes in their workshops and place orders directly on the KBC website.

For heavier users, KBC offers vending systems for shop floors, ensuring efficient tooling solutions. Regardless of your buying power, partnering with KBC guarantees great value and high-quality tools to optimize your budget.

Supporting the Future

Beyond serving its loyal client base, KBC Tools actively supports the next generation of metalworkers, machinists, tool and die makers, CNC operators, millwrights, and more. The company engages with secondary schools, trade schools, and universities, offering discounts to students and schools.

As 2025 approaches, marking 60 years in business, KBC Tools is gearing up for the future. With a revamped interactive ordering website, expanded inventory, regular sales flyers, and a passionate team, the company is poised for continued success.

Tens of thousands of clients from around the world choose KBC Tools as a trustworthy business partner. Whether you're a seasoned professional or just starting your journey in metalworking, KBC is here to provide excellent customer service, quality products, and competitive prices, ensuring you get the job done right, every time.
