No. 496 Oil Hardening – Standard
FEATURES:
- Stock is dimensionally stable, use it for the most intricate work.
- Deep hardening characteristics and fine grain structure.
- Machines freely, fully spheroidized, annealed.
- Full length identification eliminates confusion with other steels.
HARDENING:
- It is recommended that stock be heated uniformly to 1,450°F to 1,500°F and quenched in oil.
- Temperature of the quenching oil should be 120°F to 140°F for best results.
- Do not quench in water because this is an oil hardening steel.
TEMPERING:
- For maximum toughness, a tempering time of one hour at 1,450°F to 1,500°F is recommended (quench – oil, Rockwell C – 63 to 65).
- Following table may also be used as a guide, depending on type of work:
– Cutting tools: 300°F to 350°F (light straw). – Solid punches and dies: 400°F to 450°F (straw). – Spring temper: 750°F to 800°F (blue).
TOLERANCES:
- Thickness – ±.001".
- Width – Up to 8" .000/.005", 9" and over .000/.015", squares ±.010".
- Length – 36" + 5/8", Saw cut oversize to allow for finish cutting.
- Squareness – Edge All: .003 per inch, Finish: 35 microinch or finer.
